Prompted by his devoted passion for jazz, Louis Martinez organized in 1985 two evening concerts at the Theâtre de la Mer featuring Jimmy Gourley trio, Fréderic Sylvestre and Jacques Vidal.
From the year 1986 until 1987, the concerts would take place in the gardens of le Château d’Eau. The audience could then and for free enjoy the performances of Sixun, Michel Petrucciani, Steve Grossman, René Urtreger, Christian Escoudé, Charles Tyler and even more bands from our southern region.
As early as 1988 and until 1991, the festival was programmed over a whole week. The audiences began to crowd the Theâtre de la Mer where Ray Charles, Stephane Grappelli (on the very year of his 80th anniversary), Paco de Lucia, Tania Maria, Martial Solal, Dee Dee Bridgewater were to stamp their unforgettable mark.
In 1996, after a 4-year break, the town authorities asked Louis to found “Jazz à Sète”, a non-profit association to give the festival a new start. Louis began to surround himself with a team of jazz enthusiasts whose hard core members are still present today.

The festival today

Mostly focused on the prestigious venue of the Theâtre de la Mer, even if nomad projects are being studied, the festival today provides artistic productions for over 6 days. Our audiences have remained loyal and are getting larger every year: this is the price of our success as years go by.
